My thoughts today!
The question is often asked, Is economic development always a good thing? As a student of macroeconomics in the 1980s, a professor posed that question on a final exam. I have thought about it often, as much of what I do as an entrepreneur is about creating economic development opportunities. Seizing opportunity, generating ideas to solve problems, and capitalizing on those situations. Creating jobs, adding wealth, and making lives better are all part of it.
But at some point we must ask ourselves “Is economic progress or development always good, no matter what the cost, no matter what the risks that are associated with that development, and no matter how much others may be hurt by that “progress”.
Over our 150 years, there are many times when Canadians have had to decide is that necessarily a good thing. Should we build this suburb, should we drain this swamp, should we do more study before we implement that infrastructure…. I think as I look out over the wondrous north shore of Lake Superior that maybe it is time for further study.
Just thinking out loud.
